Arcadian Coast Path – Walking the Old Coastal Paths of Arcadia
There are walks that take you from point A to point B — and then there are walks that quietly pull you into the landscape, its stories, and its people. The Arcadian Coast Path belongs to the second kind.
Stretching for around 80 km along the eastern Arcadian coast, this multi-day walk follows old shepherds’ paths, and forgotten kalderimia that once connected villages long before the coastal road was built. Always close to the sea yet often high above it, the path offers sweeping views of the Argolic Gulf, Hydra and the distant Cyclades, while inland the ridges and gorges rise toward the snow‑touched peaks of Mount Parnon.
These paths lead not only to high summits and sweeping sea views, but as Carl note: “These paths take you to what are now almost forgotten places”; hilltops crowned with the remains of cyclopean walls dating back to Neolithic times; deserted villages still carrying the heavy echoes of the Greek Civil War; caves where families lived until only a few decades ago — some of them once serving as refuges for entire communities fleeing Cilician pirates or Barbary corsairs approaching across the Myrtoan Sea.
This land was never quiet in history. Eastern Arcadia, the frontier between North and South Kynouria, was fiercely contested — first by the armies of Sparta and ancient Argos, and later by Venetians, Franks, and Ottomans. Their presence remains etched into the landscape: arched Ottoman bridges, fortified hilltops, hidden settlements.
Yet the path is equally a story of everyday life. It passes “goat hotels” carved into rock, abandoned terraces where olive groves still cling defiantly to steep hillsides, and high pastures bursting with spring flowers. In these glades, one could easily imagine Pan with Nomia and other nymphs wandering through Arcadia’s mythic wilderness.
It’s a route that feels untamed, steeped in history, and profoundly Arcadian in spirit.
“The ancients established the kalderimia a thousand or more years ago, perhaps even further back in time.”
Ruth & Carl: Linking the Old Ways
Walkers, climbers, and long‑time residents of South Kynouria, Ruth and Carl have spent years exploring the hills and coastline around Leonidio and Astros. Living in a traditional mountain village, they listened to local knowledge, studied old maps, and slowly pieced together with other localas and comited travelers, where the ancient paths once ran.
The result was a decision to reconnect these old routes and turn them into a coherent long‑distance walk — not by cutting new paths, but by reviving what was already there. As Carl puts it, “It seemed selfish not to share this knowledge.”
The Arcadian Coast Path was designed with three simple ideas in mind: to link as many ancient kalderimia as possible, to stay within sight of the sea, and to make each day feel different — showcasing the surprising variety of landscapes in North and South Kynouria.
Walking these paths isn’t just practical advice — it’s essential. Dense Mediterranean vegetation makes off‑trail walking almost impossible here, and the old paths are the key to moving through this rugged wilderness safely, while discovering places most visitors never see. So, as Carl wisely warns “For this reason you should NEVER take short cuts through those mountains… ALWAYS stay on the paths!”
“These paths and tracks negotiate with the wilderness.”
The Arcadian Coast Path – Day by Day Highlights
Day 1 | Wetlands, ruins & the open sea
An easy and gentle beginning through lowlands, quiet archaeological sites, and an unexpected freshwater lake rich with birdlife, before reaching an empty stretch of beach and coastal villages.
Day 2 | Monasteries above the sea
A steady ascent from the coast along old goatherds’ paths and forest trails, climbing to a dramatically placed monastery with flowing water and unforgettable sunrise views over the Aegean.
Day 3 | High ridges & deep wilderness
The most demanding and rewarding day: a high traverse to the summit of Kourakovouni (Crow Mountain) at 1,013 m, followed by a long descent on zigzagging kalderimia back toward the sea.
Day 4 | Canyons & coastal life
A change in mood — morning coffee by the beach, a walk through the narrow and playful Prinou Canyon, then gentler paths through pastures and old windmills to the seaside town of Tyros.
Day 5 | Olive groves & local villages
The sections start with Tyros iconic windmills and wind through olive groves, oak woodland, ancient defensive sites, and classic hill village of Melana.
Day 6 | Olive groves & local villages
The trail ending with a beautiful descent into Leonidio beneath the red cliffs of Kokkinovrachos.
“For this enormous vista alone, eastern Arcadia attracts the adventurous walker.”
Why Walking These Paths Matters
Following the Arcadian Coast Path is more than a hiking experience. These routes pass historical sites, local villages, terraces still worked by hand, and landscapes where nature and human history are inseparable.
By walking these paths, travelers help keep them alive — giving value to the land, encouraging local awareness, and supporting small communities along the way. It’s slow travel in its truest form, rooted in respect for place and people.
The Guidebook
All of this knowledge, mapping, and storytelling you could find in the Arcadian Coast Path guidebook, which documents the full route along with alternative sections and suggested day walks, and brought together by Ruth and Carl Dawson. Yet they are the first to say that this is far from a one-person—or even two-person—effort. The paths exist as it is today because of a quiet network of devoted locals, skilled experts, and passionate volunteers who continue to invest their time, care, and determination into preserving and maintaining them. Without this collective dedication, the trails simply wouldn’t be what they are.
The guidebook is available in shops in Leonidio and Astros, at the Anavasi map store in Athens, and through online booksellers.
Stay tuned, as Ruth and Carl are currently working on a new book, focused entirely on local day hikes in the area — another gift to walkers and the region alike.
