Agios Athanasios Chapel: A Hidden Gem of Tsakonia
Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Myrtoan Sea, Agios Athanasios Chapel is a place of history, culture, and breathtaking views. Above Plaka and Leonidio, this small blue-domed church offers a glimpse into the region’s ancient and medieval past.

A Place of History and Mystery
The hill has been significant for centuries, with archaeological remains suggesting an ancient city, possibly Prasies or Polichni, once stood here. The northern slope still bears traces of towers and retaining walls from that era.
In medieval times, a castle was built on the summit. Known as “Ales Linidi”, it played a role in the Turkish-Venetian war of 1467 before its destruction. The chapel itself, adorned with post-Byzantine frescoes, offers insight into the region’s spiritual history.
The Ancient Pathways of Tsakonia
The chapel is accessible via an ancient footpath, part of a network that once connected Leonidio, Tsitalia, Plaka, and other villages. These routes, used for centuries, fell into disuse after the Greek Civil War as modern roads took over. Today, portions of these historic paths remain, offering visitors a journey through time, walking the same trails once traveled by villagers and traders.

A Living Tradition
Every year, on January 18th, the name day of Saint Athanasios, locals—especially those named Athanasios—make the journey to the chapel with their loved ones. In Greece, name days are often celebrated as much as, or even more than, birthdays, making this pilgrimage a cherished tradition.
Exploring Leonidio and Beyond
The surrounding landscape is a testament to Tsakonia’s rugged beauty, with cliffs, olive groves, and the deep blue sea. Leonidio, known for its traditional architecture and rich cultural scene, is a perfect base for exploring the region, which also offers cultural tours, rock climbing, hiking, and seaside relaxation.
