The Hidden Trails of Parnon Ridge | Best Hikes in the Peloponnese, Greece

There are some places in Greece where ancient paths still carry the presence of gods and mountain nymphs. Places where villages sit almost untouched between forests and sea cliffs, where shepherd trails disappear into chestnut groves, and where the sound of running water still guides the way.

The Parnon Ridge in the eastern Peloponnese is one of those places — a hidden paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and travelers looking to explore a quieter side of Greece.

View over Dafnon river and Parnon Ridge

Often overshadowed by more famous regions in Greece, Parnon remains a hidden world of deep gorges, remote valleys, mountain villages, and coastal paths overlooking the Myrtoan Sea. It is also one of the richest ecological areas in the country, home to rare endemic flowers, black pine forests, chestnut trees, and an extraordinary biodiversity unique to the Peloponnese.

For us at Nomia, these trails are much more than hiking routes. They are living paths that connect people, history, culture, and nature. Every walker who chooses to hike here helps keep these ancient routes alive. Every visit supports the small villages along the way and encourages a slower, more sustainable kind of travel.

For your convenience — and hopefully to inspire a sense of adventure — here are some of our favorite hikes in the Parnon Ridge and South Kynouria: trails that reveal some of the most beautiful and hidden corners of the Peloponnese Trail Network.

Our Favorite Hikes in One of Greece’s Most Wild Landscapes

Babale – The Hidden Valley

Some hikes feel like entering another world, and Babale is one of them.

Starting high in the conifer forests of the southern Parnon Ridge at around 1200 meters altitude, the trail follows the mountain crest before descending into a secluded hidden valley that few travelers ever reach. Ancient shepherd farms still stand here, quietly telling the story of a landscape shaped by generations of mountain life.

One of the highlights of the walk is the surreal limestone “totem garden” above Kyparissi — strange rock formations overlooking the endless blue of the Aegean Sea and the distant islands beyond.

Babale combines everything that makes the Parnon special: silence, dramatic scenery, traditional mountain culture, and the feeling of discovering somewhere truly remote.

Kosmas Loop - Blog

Kosmas Loop

Kosmas is often considered one of the most beautiful mountain villages in the Peloponnese, and this hike shows exactly why.

Starting beneath the village’s enormous plane trees, the trail winds through rivers, forests, old stone paths, and small chapels, including the peaceful Agios Georgios. Along the way, pastoral scenery blends with wild mountain landscapes and traces of the region’s rich cultural history.

Especially in spring and autumn, this becomes one of the most atmospheric walks in Greece.

Platanos Gorge

Water defines this trail.

The Platanos Gorge walk passes through the traditional villages of Platanos, Sitena, and Kastanitsa beneath the slopes of Megali Tourla, the highest peak of the Parnon Ridge. The route follows running streams, small waterfalls, stone bridges, and ancient footpaths shaded by enormous plane trees that gave Platanos village its name.

Each season reveals the gorge in a different and magnificent scenery — from lush spring landscapes to the cool green refuge of summer. Even during the warmer months, the shade and flowing water make this one of the most refreshing hikes in the region.

For those seeking crystal-clear pools and the peaceful sound of running water year-round, this is one of the best places to experience it.

Prinou Canyon

Prinou Canyon is where adventure begins.

This hidden canyon offers a playful route through narrow rock walls using ladders and ropes, making it a perfect introduction to more adventurous hiking without requiring technical canyoning skills. Family-friendly yet exciting, the trail constantly opens to spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and nearby islands.

More intimate and approachable than many of Greece’s dramatic gorges, Prinou often becomes one of the most surprising highlights of a visit to the Peloponnese.

Goat Hotel Trail

Few trails capture the spirit of the Arcadian Coast better than the path to the “Goat Hotel.” Starting from Pragmateftis village, this circular walk follows part of the Arcadian Coast Path with stunning views over the Myrtoan Sea, Leonidio, Poulithra, and the coastline of South Kynouria.

The “Goat Hotel” itself — an old shepherd shelter built into the cliffs — feels almost unreal in its location. For those continuing further, hidden caves below Agios Georgios reveal traces of local history, once used as hideouts during pirate raids. Inside, delicate stalactites still decorate the cave walls — please do not touch them.

For Those Looking for Longer Adventures in the Parnon Ridge

Nomia Trail – A Four-Day Journey Across Parnon

The Nomia Trail is a four-day hike through villages, forests, streams, and ancient pathways across the Parnon Ridge. Part of the wider Peloponnese trail network, it offers a beautiful glimpse into the region’s nature, culture, and mountain life while reconnecting old paths restored by local communities.

Arcadian Coast Path

Stretching along the eastern Arcadian coastline, this long-distance route follows forgotten shepherd trails and old kalderimia between sea and mountains. It shifts between high cliff views over the Myrtoan Sea and hidden coves, olive groves, and remote villages.

Still largely undiscovered, it is one of Greece’s most beautiful coastal walking routes.

Seasonal or Shorter Walks Worth Mentioning

Agios Athanasios Chapel

A short yet memorable walk above Leonidio and Plaka, leading to the blue-domed chapel of Agios Athanasios. Following ancient Tsakonian footpaths, the route combines sea views, history, and a peaceful atmosphere. Especially beautiful during spring and autumn afternoons.

Lepida Waterfall Hike

One of the most refreshing seasonal walks in the northern Parnon Ridge. Following the Lepida stream beneath Megali Tourla peak, the trail passes clear pools and lush greenery before reaching the impressive 70-meter Lepida Waterfall (Μελίσσι). Usually best from March to early June, when the river is flowing.

Maouris Stream Hiking Adventure

A beautiful hike through the Maouris Stream valley in the Parnon Range. The route combines shepherd paths, mountain scenery, crystal-clear waters, and deep blue natural pools. A perfect outdoor escape for nature lovers looking to experience the wilder side of the Peloponnese.
Usually best from March to May, when the river is flowing.
